The Monroe County Board of Commissioners have decided not to contract with Duke University on well testing in the Juliette area and will instead focus their efforts on supplying county water to areas affected by contaminated water. The Commissioners’ decision to discontinue the Duke study comes two days after the Georgia General Assembly dedicated $500,000 for well water testing near Plant Scherer. Testing will be coordinated by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and all testing request forms recently collected will be submitted to the GEPD. Chairman Greg Tapley has reached out to Chuck Mueller at the GEPD to inquire about when and how the testing will be performed.
Commissioners Eddie Rowland and Chairman Greg Tapley and County Manager Jim Hedges met with the county’s engineering firm, Carter Engineering, on Wednesday as part of continued efforts to bring county water lines to all areas impacted by contaminated wells. The current plans presented by Carter Engineering calls for 73.01 miles of water lines that will connect 852 homes at an estimated cost of $17 million dollars.
